July 18, 2003, Newsletter Issue #59: How Much Weight to Add

Tip of the Week

In general, with upper body exercises, increase the weight in 5 lb increments. With lower body exercise you can increase in 10 lb increments. These numbers will vary depending on the specific exercise, with movements using larger muscles, like squats, going up faster than, say, a triceps exercise. More advanced trainees using heavy weights may have to use smaller increments, or increase weight less frequently.
