October 22, 2004, Newsletter Issue #125: Vioxx and Other Pain Medicine

Tip of the Week

Follow your doctor`s instructions about taking any drugs. But remember that it takes a few years for a drug`s safety to really be established. That means, if an older drug works for you, don`t demand the latest thing you saw an ad for on tv. For arthritis, there are many older drugs available, and you may want to try the supplements glucosamine and chondroitin.
You may have taken Vioxx for sports injuries, though that`s not what it was intended for. Occasional use probably didn`t hurt you. For most soreness and minor injuries, the best thing to use is ice. The drugs won`t help your workout progress. And don`t use pain relievers before a workout. If something hurts, you should know about it so you can back off before it gets worse.
