November 5, 2004, Newsletter Issue #127: Are Weight Machines Safe?

Tip of the Week

Many trainees avoid free weights because they think machines are safer. You can get hurt on machines though. Besides getting your finger caught in the moving parts, there are overuse injuries, pulled muscles from using a machine that isn`t adjusted properly, or injuries from using a machine in a way it wasn`t intended. Moving too fast can jar a joint when it has to absorb the shock when the weight settles back down. In short, you still have to use good technique to prevent injury, no matter what kind of resistance you use.
