In a recent study, back pain sufferers were given either standard care or a supervised program of strength and endurance workouts that increased in intensity. (Note that this included strength workouts, not just cardio.) The exercisers ended up losing many fewer days of work, an outcome measured by the study. If you have back pain, it may be that you don`t have to avoid working out after all. Check with your doctor to make sure that your condition lends itself to this approach. The study was in the Jan. 20, 2004 Annals of Internal Medicine.
