August 13, 2004, Newsletter Issue #115: Strength Training for Sports

Tip of the Week

Coaches in many sports used to discourage their athletes from working out with weights, thinking they would become "muscle-bound" and slow. That`s all turned around now and most athletes do use weight training. What can help the pros can help you too. Most of the recreational sports you may do, like tennis, volleyball, running, or water sports like swimming, diving, or rowing, benefit from strength but not a lot of size. Increasing strength and balance can help your performance in any sport. If you`ve been working out, continue a couple days a week to maintain your strength while you have fun with sports. You will tone your physique and look good in your bathing suit, but not get really big, unless that is your goal and you structure your training for that.
