Tip of the Week

Yes, you can get in great shape working out at home. But many people do much better at a gym, whether it`s because of distractions at home, social reasons, or because you like the atmosphere or the equipment or classes. First, remember that location is important--most people won`t travel more than a few miles to work out. Then make sure the club has what you want: racketball, swimming pool, aerobics classes? If you`re not going to use these facilities, it doesn`t matter, but if they`re important to you, find a club that can accommodate. Visit the club at the time you expect to use it to gauge the crowds. You may want to ask for a guest pass to try it out, or if you`re sure you like it and they offer you a deal, sign up.

I saw one statistic that the average gym member ends up paying $17 a visit. If you only want to take a yoga class once a week, you might be better off just buying a day pass (and working out at home). If you go at least 2 or 3 times a week, though, that gym membership can be a real bargain.
