February 25, 2005, Newsletter Issue #143: Walking Your Brain

Tip of the Week

A couple of studies show that walking is good for your brain. In one, walking was associated with 20% reduced risk of cognitive impairment in women in their 70s. In another, men between 71 and 93 who walked at least 2 miles a day were half as likely to develop dementia as those who walked less than a quarter mile a day. This is probably due to increased circulation from a stronger cardiovascular system, as well as some neurological benefits. As such, any cardio exercise should work. So if you like to run, bike, swim, skate, stair climb, or use the elliptical trainer, you should get similar benefits. We don`t know if weight training prevents dementia. I suspect it might, but may depend on what kind of routine you use, and how often. You should supplement (but not replace) your strength workouts with some cardio exercise for maximum health benefits.
