October 15, 2004, Newsletter Issue #124: Drinking Alcohol and Working Out

Tip of the Week

Some people think that having a drink before working out calms them down and lets them concentrate better. They are wrong. What you need to remember about alcohol is that it impairs your reflexes, and that this can last for a while. Don`t drink before you work out, even if your workout is going to be later that day. After a strenuous strength workout, you should rehydrate with water or a sports beverage, and have a carb/protein snack. After a long run or other endurance workout, you need hydration even more, and you should eat to replenish carbohydrate stores. Alcoholic beverages are not good for either of these purposes. So finish rehydration, eat some carbs with protein, and then you can have your beer if you want.
