October 8, 2004, Newsletter Issue #123: Low Carb Booze?

Tip of the Week

Sugar is carbohydrate so if there`s no carb there`s no sugar. Hard liquor has no carbohydrate, but it does have alcohol, which has 7 calories per gram (vs 4 per carb gram). Liquor runs about 100 calories for 1.5 oz. Beer has about 150 per 12 oz. bottle with about 11 g of carb, light beer is about 100 and 7 g carb, and low carb beer is not much different from light. Wine has about 75 calories and 1.4 carbs for 3.5 oz. What does this mean for weight management? Not much if you just have a little glass of wine with dinner. If you toss back a 6-pack, you`re getting a lot of calories and may be on your way to that beer belly. Less for light beer, but not if you drink more because it`s "less filling." And if you have your rum with coke, you`re having it with more calories. The carbs aren`t significant--it`s the calories, and alcohol has some. Next week we`ll talk about how alcohol affects your workouts. By the way, light rum traditionally refers to the color (vs. dark).
