March 19, 2004, Newsletter Issue #94: Choosing Weight for Chest Exercises

Tip of the Week

You will be able to use more weight on the press than the fly, because you are using more muscles. You will also be able to use more weight for flat presses and flies than for the incline versions, because the middle pecs are larger than the upper pecs. You can often use more weight on decline exercises, because the range of motion is less, but declines are less important than the others. When switching to another chest exercise, start with less weight than you think you can handle and work up gradually to the weight that feels right. These principles also apply if you are using weight machines, like a vertical bench and a pec deck.
