April 16, 2004, Newsletter Issue #98: Making Crunches Harder

Tip of the Week

Abs are like other skeletal muscles. They get stronger in response to increased resistance. Don`t advance the ab exercises by doing more and more reps. Make them harder. One way is to go slower, especially on the lowering phase. If you have a slant board, you can increase resistance by lying on it with a slight slant and your head on the lower end. For reverse crunches (where you contract the lower abs and raise your hips), lie with your head on the higher end of the board. You can also make your crunches harder by holding a weight plate on your chest. Or hold dumbbells in your hands and cross your arms on your chest.
