August 20, 2004, Newsletter Issue #116: Is Obesity a Disease?

Tip of the Week

I`m not getting excited about this now, as it is uncertain what will be paid for. I may have more to say later. Right now, let`s look at the cost for some obesity treatments, starting with surgery, which most articles seem to mention.
gastric bypass surgery: over $30,000
health club membership: about $500/yr (varies by club and location)
home gym: $400-$3000
bench and free weights: starts about $200
running/walking shoes: $50 on sale
jump rope: $10
Weight Watchers membership: about $10/meeting
dietary counseling: $60/hr and up
personal training: $20-75/hour
fitness books and videos: $10-$30
weight training ebook: less than $9 (see http://www.booklocker.com/books/1222.html)

Most people can control their weight with proper eating and exercise. Surgery should not be the first thing anybody thinks of. Let`s start with fitness, which can make you healthier, even if you are overweight. (Not that I wouldn`t like to have the government pay for my gym membership or some new sneakers.)
