August 27, 2004, Newsletter Issue #117: How Many Calories Can You Burn?

Tip of the Week

There is a limit to how many calories you can burn in exercise. Much of this has to do with your aerobic capacity, which is a result of both genetics and training. The highest aerobic capacity is found in athletes such as elite marathoners, Tour de France cyclists, and top cross country skiers. To burn 650 calories in half an hour, you would have to expend the same energy as needed to run a mile in 4 min. 40 sec--not world class anymore, but not bad. If you can`t do that, you`re unlikely to burn 650 in the circuit. I don`t know where they got that number. It may be the maximum their equipment can support. This would be like saying my running shoes can run a marathon in under 3 hours. They can, but not with me in them. This is not to put down circuit training clubs, which are great for many women (and are now appearing for men). Just don`t take all their claims at face value.
