March 4, 2005, Newsletter Issue #144: Personal Trainer Certification

Tip of the Week

A few years ago there were over 200 certifying agencies for personal trainers. Who knows how many there may be now? They range from respected organizations that give rigorous exams to weekend workshops that pass everybody. Now, an unqualified trainer can cause injury, turn you off exercise, or just waste your money. Don`t be reluctant to ask a prospective trainer about his or her qualifications. Look up the certifying agency on the internet. When I was working as a personal trainer in a gym, I was surprised how few clients asked about my qualifications. Sure, it`s important to work with somebody you get along with, but you don`t have to pay big money for a workout partner. Here are some good certifying organizations, from an article in Club Business International: AFAA, ACSM, ACE, Chek Institute, Cooper Institute, IFPA, ISSA, NASM, NCSF, NESTA, NETA, NFPT, NSCA, WITS
