Exercise to improve the cardiovascular system involves rhythmic, sustained action of the large muscles, usually the legs. Walking qualifies as does running, swimming, skating, biking, rowing, step aerobics, and cross country skiing, among others. Walking farther or faster makes the exercise more effective.
