July 30, 2004, Newsletter Issue #113: Strength Training for Seniors

Tip of the Week

There is no age at which conventional weight training should be avoided. It depends on your own exercise experience and physical condition. The advice in the article is meant to encourage sedentary older people, which is fine, but you shouldn`t cut back if you can do more. Younger, deconditioned people have to start with light weights too. And everyone should increase resistance as they get stronger. So start with a weight/resistance that is challenging for you. If you are older, or very sedentary, check with your doctor before starting an exercise program.
