February 11, 2005, Newsletter Issue #141: Sprain or Strain?

Tip of the Week

I was watching a basketball game where Kobe Bryant was carried out with a sprained ankle. Soon they cut to a reporter outside the locker room who told us that x-rays were negative for broken bones and the diagnosis was ankle sprain, but they were doing an MRI the next day to see if there was ligament damage. Well, a sprain is ligament damage. The reporter should have known that. Don`t believe everything you hear on TV.

Ankle sprain, incidentally, is the most common sports injury, although it is unlikely to happen during weight training. If you`re recovering from a sprained ankle, you can do your upper body work and maybe some leg extensions and curls. Modify, but don`t skip your workouts.
