June 25, 2004, Newsletter Issue #108: How Much Water?

Tip of the Week

The Institute of Medicine issued a report that, contrary to common belief, most people can stay adequately hydrated just by following their thirst. Juice, coffee and tea, soda, and even a little beer can help with hydration--these things do not dehydrate you. Also, we get about 20% of the liquid we ingest from food. So it`s not that you don`t need liquid, it`s just that it doesn`t all have to be water. And thirst is a good indicator. (You still should drink some water, especially if you don`t want to take in a lot of empty calories.) And the IOM emphasizes that liquid needs vary widely, and you need more in hot weather and when you are active. Work out in hot weather? Make sure you drink up. No one seems to know where the 8 glasses recommendation came from. No studies support it.
